Feb 2018 Taverham Hall Norwich As part of their Ancient Egypt topic, Year 3 welcomed Lorraine Theobald from Multicultural Dance to show them how the Ancient Egyptians used to dance.
As music was played, pupils were encouraged to listen carefully and imagine themselves gliding effortlessly along the river Nile on a boat, under the heat of the Egyptian sun. Pupils were given the opportunity to play instruments, dress in traditional Egyptian style and even to try to balance a walking stick on their head, all elements of Egyptian dance.
Mile Cross Primary School Norwich Mayan dancing by Kayla November 15th
Earlier today, we did a Mayan dance workshop. We did it with a lovely lady, who knows a lot about the Mayans. her name is Lorraine. We did this in the hall. All of the class did Mayan dancing because of our topic, Mayans. All of this was really fun.
This morning involved lots of dancing, listening and teamwork. We listened to Mayan songs. We had very Mayan face paints. We did the Kulcantan dance, the Mayans admired this dance. It was a dance that was the Mayans favourite. It was a snake form that went in and out the space. This activity ws one of my favourite. You had to hold hands with the person in front and back and follow the person in front.
I think the instruments were good because of the sound. I really think the drums because they had a loud beat to it. In my opinion, if you have been learning about the Ancient Mayans then Lorraine is the one to call. Lorraine is really good at Mayan things. In my opinion, shes really creative but these things she has thought of are true facts. It really felt like i was a proper Mayan. Do you want her to visit?
Again, Lorraine is the one to go for. I really enjoyed playing the instruments and making up dance routines the most. I would defanitly recommend her because she’s fun, enjoyable and gives you more and more facts in an hour. Thanks Lorraine.

Here are some comments from other teachers in the school for you.
Dear Lorraine, Firstly, thank you for coming to Linton Heights Junior School yesterday. The children had a brilliant day, in which you played a significant part. The structured discussion at the beginning of the session helped to place dance within the Mayan context. The physical dancing was great fun and much loved by all. Whilst the girls were bound to love it, I was delighted to see every single boy join in with such enthusiasm, inspired by tales of hunting or being a jaguar or quetzal. The greatest accolade was surely from my partner teacher, Mr Wilson, who promptly asked you if you would come again next year! Many thanks to you, Lorraine, for such successful Mayan dancing . Lorraine will be leading a thorough warm-up and starting the class initially with earthy folk styles, perfecting the Egyptian walk and camels with punctuating hips. The range of music used will include Hossam Ramzy’s Baladi Plus and the songs of Ahmed Adaweya. Students are requested to come prepared with sticks and veils just in case (spares will be available to borrow) as Lorraine has a spontaneous style and likes to have scope to go with the flow.

Sue Sue Faircloth Year 5 Class Teacher Linton Heights Junior School
At St Mary’s School Colchester teaching Chinese dragon dances, and focus on the Shang Dynasty of China ‘Wonderful workshops Lorraine’ thank you Mrs Boyd head of year 4.
